Dental fear and anxiety keeps millions of patients away from the dental office every year. When you suffer from dental anxiety, going to the dentist can truly be a more painful experience. Fear and anxiety can make you tense up as your body goes into fight or flight mode. This can lower your pain threshold and make even usually mild procedures hurt much worse than they should. It is in the best interest of both you and the dentist that your next visit is relaxed and comfortable.

What are the benefits of sedation dentistry?

  • Relieves Anxiety - The biggest benefit is that it relieves anxiety that many people feel during their dental appointments. For those with severe anxiety, sedation dentistry may mean the difference between being able to access dental care and avoiding it completely.
  • No Memory of the Procedure - For some patients, the memory of a bad experience with a dentist in their past keeps coming back every time they visit the dentist. With many types of sedation, the memory of the dental procedure will be hazy or even completely absent.
  • Reduced Gag Reflex - It is important to have a gag reflex to protect yourself from inhaling anything besides air. However, in some cases, the gag reflex is too sensitive, and having the dentist do work inside your mouth may activate it. This makes it hard for the dentist to do the necessary procedure. With sedation, the dentist is able to work more efficiently and the patient is far more comfortable during their visit.
  • Faster Treatment - Treatment can be completed in fewer sessions when using sedation. This makes treatment more convenient for patients because they need to schedule fewer sessions. The benefit here can be very significant depending on the treatment required.

At Mobile Comprehensive Dentistry, we offer two main types of sedation dentistry: Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) and Oral Sedation.

Nitrous Oxide

Allows for a light level of relaxation and sedation to be achieved. You breathe nitrous oxide through a mask placed over your nose, while supervised by the dentist.

Oral Sedation

Is the effective use of a prescribed medication taken shortly before treatment. You'll relax comfortably into a state of conscious sedation. You'll be awake and able to respond to instructions from Dr. O’Donnell or Dr. Willis, but you'll also be deeply relaxed and won’t remember the appointment afterward.

Sedation Dentistry allows Mobile Comprehensive Dentistry to create a safe and comfortable dental experience for patients who have avoided the dentist out of fear. Sedation dentistry is often thought to induce sleep in those who undergo it. This is actually not the case. What sedation dentistry is really about is taking just the right amount of professionally administered sedatives to calm the patients who would otherwise experience strong fear, stress, or anxiety when having dental work performed. For those patients, sedation dentistry at Mobile Comprehensive Dentistry may be the perfect solution.
